Jason Wu. The 26-year-old designer was born in Taipei and has been designing for a few years. His line was recently picked up by Nordstrom.
First lady Michelle Obama took the stage at the Neighborhood Ball in a one-shouldered off-white gown designed by another lesser-known designer.
She wore a dress from his collection for her interview with Barbara Walters.
As for the ball gown, I'm a fan. White (and off-white) is chic anytime of year. The detailing was subtle but added texture. And the one-shouldered silhouette is flattering. If I had arms and shoulders that toned, I'd be showing them off as much as possible.
What's your take on the first lady's evening gown?

And the evening gown designer is ...

That gown was horrible! It did not look good on Michelle and by the picture, she didn't feel comfortable wearing it. She could have done much better.
ReplyDeleteBarack, on the other hand, looked fabulous in his tuxedo.
I love the dress! It's almost as beautiful as she is!
ReplyDeleteThe design was OK, but it really looked like a bedspread that my grandmother had when I was a child with the knobby things on it. Bad choice for such an important evening.
ReplyDeleteI think the dress is very elegant, but may be too long. She keeps having to adjust it every time they dance.
ReplyDeleteMichelle's gown looked just like my daughter's junior high school prom dress [in the 80's]. Bad selection for diamonds and/or white gold necklace with her gold coat and dress during the day. Change designers and get a color consultant.
ReplyDeleteI think the best part of Michelle's attire is her great physique. It's a shame really, she could get away with anything she is in such good shape, but this dress was a miss for me. What kind of material was it made from I wonder?
ReplyDeleteMichelle Obama is quite stylish without any help - and I think she ought to keep it that way. Michelle's gown tonight did not look like it was necessarily designed for her - but just another designer label.
ReplyDeleteI think Michelle Obama would have looked better wearing Beyonce's dress. The white dress, with a train and Obama in a tux looked like they had just gotten married... I did think the dress was pretty, but just not right for her and this occasion...and BTW does Michelle Obama wear a wedding ring/band?
ReplyDeleteBoth dresses were hideious. Michelle looks much better in jewel tones. I think someone said the dress looked like a bedspread.. I agree. But the dress she wore to her husband's swearing in was even worse.. totally lackluster and what an ugly color. She seems to favor yellow. A dark school bus yellow might be good, but with her skin color she should stick to jewel tones. I truly hope she gets some fashion sense fast..
ReplyDeleteI love Michelle's carriage--but her style has a lot to be desired. From the horrific election night red and black disaster, to this white thing that looks like it was made by tying kite tails together...I don't understand it. She is so gorgeous, but should be wearing flowing, more fitted attire. The camel skirt and coat with the black beaded top was beautiful, the inaugural dress, so-so, but the gown...two thumbs down. And dare I suggest it...she is not too old to get braces, and would feel so much more at ease with her teeth pulled back a bit.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the previous poster. Michelle Obama should consider orthodontics, ie. Invisalin. She is pretty but her teeth detract from her smile.
ReplyDeleteThis looked like a long maturnity sundress with pasted on flowers that looked like gauze. In other words it looked like a Junior Prom dress from the '70's. Lesser known designers are great if they're talented.
ReplyDeleteI thought the dress lookeed verry nice on the first Laday Michelle. She looked very eloqent. She is truly a person who likes a certain look for herself. The suit for the swearing in was the business. I loved the look on her and the color was a great choice.
ReplyDeleteI think she looked STUNNING! I loved it!
ReplyDeleteTo Obama is 1/2 white: yes, Michelle wears a wedding ring. The ring and band are yellow gold, the diamond is between one and two carats.
ReplyDeleteI think it´s a really good sign that the new first lady goes beyond the traditional brands and gives young designers a chance. Her dresses always do reflect her own strong personality. Fabulous!
