Oscars fashion highs and lows

Sarah Jessica Parker's Dior Haute Couture dress was pretty, but rather boring by SJP standards. She does favor big gowns, so the full skirt isn't too surprising. However, her cleavage is.

Meh.

Maybe my expectations were too high, or maybe celebs didn't want to seem too ostentatious, but after the Oscars on Sunday night, I was left feeling kinda meh about the fashion.

You can read my take on the best/worst dressed here.

There were quite a few good looks: Freida Pinto was fab in John Galliano; the always chic Diane Lane looked classically beautiful in Dolce & Gabbana.

There were also quite a few looks that landed in the so-so pile: Sarah Jessica Parker's "barely mint" Dior Haute Couture; Viola Davis in Reem Acra, Reese Witherspoon in Rodarte.

Though New York Fashion Week just wrapped up on Friday, some of the trends I saw in the fall 2009 collections there have already made their way to the celeb set.

Architectural pleating and folding, asymmetry, metallics and modernism were all in play, from Kate Winslet’s sleek, shaped coif to Marisa Tomei’s stunning gray origami-inspired Versace gown.

What was your favorite fashion moment? Least favorite look?

  1. For me - I'm a bit different than your take on Anne Hathaway, I actually liked the color on her. It was pale like her but, her skin is so luminous and dewy that she can carry it off. She's quickly becoming my fav celeb style icon.

Worst: hands down - Beyonce *gag*

  2. Rachel: I pretty much share the opinions in your "best/worst" photo gallery.

Sarah Jessica Parker unfortunately showed up as Glinda the Good Witch from WIZARD OF OZ. Jessica Biel's look was defeated by her gown's "fabric growth" front panel. The usually reliable Heidi Klum completely missed the mark: hair and makeup give her face a mannish look and the earrings look like Christmas tree decorations. The gown is a frenzied failure: the fabric looks like vinyl, the bow is silly and the cut is amateurish. Still, Beyonce is the runaway Worst disaster.

Kate Winslet looks severely assured in a gorgeously regal gown that was expertly complimented by her hair, makeup and jewelry. Salma Hayek, however, is my Best style winner. Salma absolutely embraces her curves and consistently chooses elegant, sophisticated, sublimely colored gowns that draw deserved attention to her breasts and distinctively pretty face. Her hair, makeup, jewelry and accessories are flawless, and the extra ingredient that brings everything together is her cheerful, positive personality.

Salma Hayek is a talented, endearing, exciting, remarkable woman.
