Give MObama a break already!

Oprah Winfrey shares the cover of her namesake magazine with first lady Michelle Obama

First Lady Michelle Obama can't catch a (fashion) break.

The fuss over her right to bare arms hasn't fully died down, and the fashionistas have moved on to the Oprah Magazine cover and MObama's plastic Sonya Rykiel belt.

Some of my fashion colleagues can't abide the belt, but I like it and what it represents. The First Lady is making some savvy choices, and in small ways, demonstrating her fashion-forwardness.

The fall 2009 runways were packed with plastic apparel, little of which looked the least bit wearable and comfortable. Until I saw Michelle Obama rocking the plastic belt without betraying her personal style.

Same goes for her bare arms. I've said it before, and I'll say it again (and again and again): If I had arms that looked that good, I'd be showing them off every chance I got.

What's your take on the First Lady's bare arms and/or plastic belt?

Others make a ton of money and they're "greedy"!

  13. What part of Africa did they come from. They may have African ancestory but NEITHER of these women fit the TRUE definition of "African American". This is why white people take offense.

  14. With the economy in this sad state, I truly believe my inability to maintain my head above water is a tad more important than what she wears.

  15. Self-confidence is sexier than any stiletto or tight dress. And it matches everything you own

AS A MALE, THIS TELLS ME ALL I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE AUTHOR.

  21. anon@5:16 If you are not from here then why did you come here? If you don't like the way things are please go back to your own country...and rid us of you totally. The article is about fashion and if you Obamahaters would just read instead of always spitting nothing our of you mouth you have understood that from reading the aricle. Anon@5;16 I bet your granddaddy didnt think that when he was going into the slave women house at night. (read between the lines.)

  22. I think Michelle looks "smashing." She is, after all, the President's wife and she deserves respect from everyone, even the "morons" that can't spell the word. Michelle is gifted, intelligent and gracious, and the same goes for Oprah. Oprah and all her money has helped more people than the "morons" can count (and I doubt they can count past their fingers and toes). Bottom line, our First Lady is a reincarnation of Jackie Kennedy and the only difference between JFK and Obama is the color. I believe Obama will be a great President, just give him some time to make all things right again.

  23. WOW Obamamania at its best. The "incarnation of Jackie O?" How insanely ludicrous. Jackie O would never have been so myopic as to say the first time she was "really proud" of her country was ONLY when someone of a certain race had a chance to be president. And would not have grunted the way MO did at that press conference where she told people how to vote: you can't do it based on, I like that guy (slump and GRUNT). Or, she's cute." What the h*ll was that GRUNT all about? Not First Ladylike AT ALL. She is obsessed with race and is not 3/5 the woman Jackie O was. As for her uneven taste in clothes, that spider woman / black widow thing she wore at the DemLemming convention was awful. The plastic belt is cheap and juvenile and belongs on Seventeen. And for ANON@4:52 who said "...women with intelligents, perserverance, and style," it's "intelligence" and "perseverance." Ironic, and telling, that you can't spell intelligence. Typical of most Obamunist lemmings.

  24. I think Oprah is one of the biggest racist out there .... you can see it from here shows. She is also one of the most arrogant greedy celebrities in the spotlight .... imho is all

Amen to that. This chorus of "Oh's and "Ah's" is just to divert people from real issues this country is facing and from the president who is clueless (to quote "You know, I have more than enough to do without having to worry about the financial system"). Don't forget about the ongoing party circuit in the White House on taxpayers' dime. They are already talking about second stimulus

  26. I love it! Plus, she is an amazing role model who carries herself with dignity and class. And for those of you who ask, who cares? Then why are you reading a section on fashion and style if you don't care?

  27. Why????? No one the Bush 43 a break...

  28. race,race,race,race,race,race,etc.etc.etc.etc.etc.

Have any of you taken any type of genetics classes? There is no such thing as race, only pigment differs us from one another as god created everyone equal though our own culture, upbringing, education and countless other things make us not equal. If we should argue, it should be over the choices we make and leave our pigment out of it. But African Americans (please, stop using this term, no other cultures prior nationality comes into the name of their American citizenship, why should theirs?) use this to their advantage, and all the rest of us let them. Stop bowing down to that level, we should be called the same thing:human.

  29. LoL @ all these comments! You can tell we are really in the Bible belt! ;)

Anyways, kudos to Michelle for pulling off a classy and casual while also looking impeccable. But to the author: Give MObama a break already? I may be the only one out there who is still working in finance and trying to keep my head above water while also trying to staying abreast of the rapid, and earth shaking changes that are taking place every day in the world. Worrying about the First Lady's wardrobe is a problem I think more people with they had!

  30. Michelle Obama has fantastic style.

  34. OMG! I can't believe the comments over a "BELT" or any fashion that MOBAMA wears!! This is NOT a political forum. This is about FASHION!!! Geeeez lighten up people!!

  35. "What part of Africa did they come from. They may have African ancestory but NEITHER of these women fit the TRUE definition of "African American". This is why white people take offense."

What is the TRUE definition of "African American"? There are many different types of people with African descent and they all should have the right to call themselves African.

I'm an Asian American and I run into people everyday in this area who think all Asians look the same or similar and ONLY come from Asia.
When I tell them that my ancestors are from India and that my parents and grandparents come from the Caribbean, their heads explode.

  36. I adore the belt. The dress is a great shade of red...I'd like it better if the sweater were the same colour. Finally after years of that dreadful Laura Bush some fresh style in the White House.
