Road Trip: Ya'll welcome H&M!

I just shouted out loud to no one in particular that H&M opens in Hot-lanta tomorrow at Atlantic Station. Hm ... I was only going to clean the house this weekend ...

Those of you familiar with road-tripping to ATL for your IKEA fix (guilty!) now have even more incentive to drive four hours for cheap imports. Yes, there's another H&M in Georgia (Alpharetta, at North Point Mall), but you could reason you're saving gas if you can hit both joints in one stop now at Atlantic Station. Not that I'm rationalizing, or anything.

H&M, the oft-imitated cheap, chic chain got its start in Sweden in 1947. They've now got 1,500 stores in 29 countries. The clothing and accessories (for men, women and children) are "created centrally by around 100 in-house designers together with buyers and pattern makers."

Did I mention the goods are cheap and cute? I get tons of compliments on all the H&M goodies I could wrestle into my suitcase while I was in NYC in February.

Maybe this is a sign for H&M devotees in Charlotte. The QC is constantly in Atlanta's shadow ... does that mean we'll finally get our own shop soon? Please?

  4. I wish Charlotte would get an H&M.. Midtown seems to be a good location for them to go, they would complement the retail nicely there, don't you guys agree?

  5. H&M would be ideal in Charlotte and Uptown will be the perfect location. Uptown would also be good location for Salvatore Ferragamo, A|X Armani Exchange, Bloomingdale's, and Virgin Mega Music.

  6. I agree with the last two comments, midtown Charlotte would be a great location for H&M and other mentioned shops. A Gucci Store would really help take Uptown to a new level. A few brand name jewelers and a bookstore woudl work as well.

  7. I like H&M and wish the would come to Charlotte, but spend $80 (low estimate) to drive round trip to Atlanta is not worth it!

I'm starting to think the writer of this blog is more out of touch with the people than the average politician!

  8. There is a bookstore in uptown - it's in founder's hall. It's called The BookMark, and the people working there are great. It's not huge, but they always seem to have what I'm looking for. There are plenty of seats outside in the atrium and there's a carabou coffee right next door. Please patronize your locally owned stores!

  9. We need an H&M now!!!!!!!!!!! The Midtown location with Best Buy, Target, Marshalls, Trader Joe's would be a great spot! I agree. Not sure if there is any room at Southpark. And how about one at Carolina Place Mall and Concord Mills too!

  10. Shop locally, please. No more chain stores in Charlotte. By the way, have you BEEN to Atlanta in the summer?

  11. If there is one chain we do need, it is H&M. Sorry!

  12. I emailed H&M about bringing a store to Charlotte. I got a really nice (I'm sure canned) response which said they are always looking for new and thriving cities to open their next H&M store. I encourage you to visit their website and ask them to open a store here.
Apparently that is one of the reasons that IKEA is opening a store here! Woo hoo!

  13. I heard from someone I know that works at Wachovia that H&M, Dolce and Gabbana and Barnes & Noble will possibly be coming at Wachovia, they are trying to court them. B&N is supposed to have a 2-story store at 300 S Tryon -- but that is indefinitely postponed apparently... stay posted y'all.

  14. Such shops at Wachovia would be a great retail start for Uptown. I hope Gucci follows!

  15. I've been living in Europe for a little while (I'm a native Charlottean) and think that H&M is getting a little tired and cheap. Now, if we could get a Zara in Charlotte - that would really be news!
